Why Does God Allow the Innocent to Suffer?
The question of why a loving God permits innocent suffering has troubled believers for centuries. It touches the deepest parts of human experience—pain, loss, and confusion. Within Christian spirituality, saints like Padre Pio offer a perspective rooted in trust in God’s providence, even when life feels incomprehensible.
A Story That Raises the Question
In the Italian coastal town of Albenga, a tragic event occurred when a boat capsized, claiming the lives of more than 30 children. When asked why God would allow such suffering, Padre Pio responded not with a direct explanation, but with an allegory that has since become a powerful reflection on human limitation.
He described a child watching his mother embroider. From below, the child sees only a tangled mess of threads. But from above, the mother sees a beautiful, intentional design. Padre Pio explained that we, too, view life from a “low stool,” unable to see the full picture of God’s plan.
This idea aligns closely with the teachings of Saint Claude de la Colombière, who emphasized trust in divine providence. He wrote that God sees beyond human limitations—He understands the future, the consequences of every event, and what ultimately leads to our good.
